sister act

April 29, 2011 § Leave a comment

so, in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past 6 months, the royal wedding of prince william and now-princess catherine was this morning in london’s westminster abbey. the alexander mcqueen dress, the trees in the church, the extreme hats- i’m sure you’ve heard of it all by now. but beyond all of that, my favorite part of the wedding by far was watching kate and her sister pippa.

they’re both beautiful, that’s obvious. and they look so much alike that i bet they probably get mistaken for twins, like me and my sister do all the time. but i so enjoyed watching them together; it’s so clear that they love each other, and that there’s a bond between them that only sisters ever have. pippa (which i read is short for philippa) looked so happy for her sister, and so honored to be a part of her wedding. it makes me happy to know that kate will have that kind of support as she moves into her new life as a princess, and at the same time it makes me sad for other sisters who don’t have that same bond. there’s no one quite like a sister.

sea siren chic

April 20, 2011 § Leave a comment

felicity brown. cap sleeve ruffle dress. $6,700. (image via polyvore)

doesn’t this oceanic confection remind you of mermaid and the deep blue sea? with waves of ruffles and pops of bright coral at the shoulders, it’s simultaneously alluring and playful–the essence of a sea siren.

it reminds me of a few lines from one of my favorite poems, “the love song of j. alfred prufrock” by t.s. eliot.

I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
I do not think that they will sing to me.
I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.
We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.

lust list: all about brigitte

last night, t and i watched “contempt” the 1963 jean-luc godard film about film starring brigitte bardot. she’s such a beauty, with all that blonde hair, perfect lips, and a killer body, and i started to wonder what it might be like to dress brigitte. i’ve always thought of brigitte as a woman who prefers to be naked, but that’s not to say that she doesn’t have some phenomenal wardrobe choices too. her style is understated, elegant, and a little bit sexy; she wears the clothes, not the other way around.

alice & olivia. cody color block dress. $368. (image via polyvore)

essential brigitte-chic: easy, simple, and somehow all about the body beneath.

lenny. deep v maillot bikini. $180. (image via polyvore)

for when skinny-dipping isn’t appropriate.

preen line. bianca high-waisted stretch-cotton skirt. $410. (image via polyvore)

brigitte would pair it with a simple blouse and bare feet.

lust list: birthday girl

April 5, 2011 § 1 Comment

my birthday is coming up, and everyone keeps asking me what i want. strangely enough, i don’t have a clue. this is very unlike me; i was the kid with a birthday wish list made up at least 6 months in advance. i briefly considered making a lust list all about the things that i want, but since i don’t know what i want, i decided to pay homage to my birth-decade: the 80s. everyone loves the 80s; to me, they were one of the most whimsical eras in recent history, and using them as inspiration gives me a chance to pick things that i might not normally wear. this week’s lust list celebrates my birthday with an updated 80s ensemble; happy birthday to me!

bodkin. sassafras shirtdress. $255. (image via polyvore)

there is nothing more 80s chic than a loose-fitting dress that shows a little skin.

sergio rossi. aztec laser cut suede booties. $870. (image via polyvore)

i envision these as early-80s boots, still clinging to a little bit of 70s vibe. the perfect compliment to bare legs.

ludevine. fossil drop earrings with diamonds. $18,235. (image via polyvore)

80s fashion was ALL about the accessories. think of molly ringwald in “pretty in pink”, or the early incarnations of madonna. aka dangle earrings are essential.

1950 + 60 years of progress

January 27, 2011 § Leave a comment

i honestly have NO words to describe how much i love dior’s haute couture spring/summer 2011 show that debuted this week in paris. it’s everything about 1950’s femininity and fashion, but with a liberal dash of all that’s modern. i’m not going to say femme fatale, because i don’t think that does these models justice; they seem to be stronger and tougher than any femme fatale i’ve ever heard of. the models and clothes are beautiful, but i think the most impressive part of the show is this acceptance of womanhood that can be pretty AND strong. it’s been 60 years in the making.

no more waity, katie

January 25, 2011 § Leave a comment

after what seems like a billion years, kate middleton and prince william are getting married this april! and what better way to celebrate the royal wedding than with a commemorative nail polish color? “no more waity, katie” is a new shade due out this march from butter london, a nail polish line made without chemicals (it’s always refreshing when people start caring what they put in their products. it makes my life a lot easier.).

“no more waity, katie” is a lavender-gray shade with purple sparkles. and given the entire world’s obsession with the royal couple (and every woman living out her princess fantasy vicariously through kate in the process; but no judgment here. i’m right there with you, although i was always partial to harry) i can’t think of a better way to ride the royal wave than coming out with a nail polish that pays tribute to the event.

wouldn’t it be cute if kate actually wore the color? i can only imagine that she’s more relieved than any of us that the wait is finally over. now i’m wishing that i had my own nail polish color; if i could pick anything, it would probably be the blingingest gold you’ve ever seen. (ps: butter london’s website has a ton more colors that i’m already fantasizing about!)

no more waity, katie. butter london. $22. available march 2011.

lust list

January 24, 2011 § 1 Comment

thanks to my recent discovery of polyvore.com, i am having no trouble making a list of all the beautiful clothes/shoes/bags/etc. in the world that i want. each moday, i’m going to pick my top 3 and share them with you. i don’t know if i will ever get anything thing on my list (fingers crossed that isn’t true), but i think it’s a much-needed antidote for the monday blues.

note: i found all of these items on polyvore.com, but i had to get the item information from the retailer’s websites. i (unfortunately) do not have that much free time to browse every designer website in the world!

do you remember my post about cinderella shoes? these could work. haus of price, multi gem pump, $239.95. (image via solestruck)

all saints, bedouin scarf in faded blush, $90.00. (image via all saints)

red valentino, skirt AR3GN222-V60295R 668, $295.00. (image via red valentino)

modern fashion, medieval conflict

January 22, 2011 § 1 Comment

have you heard the latest controversy in the fashion world? elle turkey photographed a fashion shoot in the city of ani. ani, now in turkey, once belonged to neighboring armenia, and was taken by a turkish army in 1064. ani was known as “the city of 1,001 churches” and was a major religious center during the medieval era.

however, many modern armenians see ani as a symbol of turkish oppression, and the images of carefree models posing in the ruins of the ani cathedral seem a little more than sacrilegious. it’s undeniable that the photos have a haunting, dreamy look that’s sublime for editorials, and that the clothes are perfectly complimented by the background, but is it going too far?

click the link at the bottom of the post (or any of the pictures) to see the rest of the photos from the shoot.

polyvore.com

have you SEEN this site???? i just discovered polyvore.com last night and i seriously cannot stop drooling over it. not only is it a collection of all the hottest jewelery and clothes (and the links of where to buy them), but it’s also a forum for fashion questions (ex: what can i wear with my new glittery heels?), and a wardrobe inspiration mecca. unfortunately, i doubt that i can afford anything on the site, but it’s all so pretty that i’m ALMOST satisfied by just looking at it.

i was playing around earlier and clicked “shop” and “chain link bracelets” and BOOM: the most gorgeous lanvin bracelet i have ever seen. i want it soooooooooooo much. of course, it’s almost $700, so that’s probably just a pipe dream, but IT’S JUST SO PRETTY. it also comes in coral. imagine wearing them both with a pair of skinny jeans, a white v-neck, a scarf, and some leather boots. *swoon*
